    Kirkland Reads, Creating Conversations, sponsored by KirklandSafe, helps you connect with other Kirklanders through inclusive and welcoming conversations about Spare Parts: Four Undocumented Teenagers, One Ugly Robot, and the Battle for the American Dream. Join the conversation this fall by participating in book group discussions, being inspired by celebrated teacher and speaker Fredi Lajvardi, and viewing and discussing the movie and documentary.

    Book Group Discussions

    Join the conversation throughout September and October as book groups across Kirkland discuss Spare Parts and explore its themes of ingenuity, perseverance and collaboration. 


    Host a conversation with your own book club or join discussions at the Kirkland or Kingsgate Libraries and at The Book Tree, 609 Market Street, Kirkland, WA.

    Meet the teacher who inspired the teens in "Spare Parts" and the STEM movement, Fredi Lajvardi!

    Sunday, Oct 21st, 3-6 p.m., Peter Kirk Community Center


    Bring your friends, neighbors and book club to spend an afternoon with celebrated teacher and robotics educator Fredi Lajvardi as he shares valuable insight on fostering creativity, teamwork, and embracing diversity. He will kindle your innate sense of ingenuity with his remarkable first hand account of how a team of high school students became a national championship robotics team.  Q & A and book signing to follow his talk. Come early to make die cut and origami robots and enjoy music starting at 2:30 pm.

    Exploring Robotics

    Robot Expo

    The Lake Washington High School Robotics club will be driving their personal robots. Learn easy ways to program robots, and learn about FIRST Mindstorm projects for elementary students


    Robot Garage

    3rd-7th grade participants use robotics kits to explore the basic engineering skills required to build a successful extraterrestrial rover. Students will also learn some of the history of robotics and discuss the latest achievements of robots in space, on Earth, and in the home.  

    "Spare Parts" Movie Nights

    Join us for two FREE viewings as George Lopez, Jamie Lee Curtis, Carlos PenaVega and Marisa Tomei lead a winning cast in the Hollywood version of Spare Parts (2015) (PG 13), another great way to experience Kirkland Read’s book for 2018. A facilitated discussion will follow.

    Fredi Lajvardi: Improbable to Unstoppable

    Meet the celebrated STEM teacher who inspired the underdogs in Spare Parts! 

      

    • Sunday, October 21st, 3 - 6 p.m., Peter Kirk Community Center, 352 Kirkland Ave, Kirkland, WA 
    • Come early for robot origami making and music starting at 2:30 p.m.

    "Underwater Dreams" Documentary

    Features the four former students and their teachers 10 years after their improbable win and the STEM legacy inspired by their school.  This movie is not rated. 


    • Saturday, November 3rd, 3 p.m.,  Kirkland Teen Union Building (KTUB), 348 Kirkland Avenue, Kirkland, WA 
    • A facilitated discussion will follow. 
    • Kids activities:  Die cut and origami robot making in the lobby before and during the documentary and discussion.
